Addressed by Tan Sri Lim at the "Two Arts On A Jade Stone" Photography Exhibition of Works of Alberto Giacometti
21 March 2003
I would like to extend my personal warm welcome to His Excellency Mr Adolf Ogi. Your Excellency, we are much honoured by your visit. We are here to celebrate the genius of two creative people, whose art and artistry remain a powerful message and influence to today′s generation.
Once in a long while, we come across an individual whose work for and dedication to humanity have a profound impression on the hearts of all they come into contact with. Our special guest is one such person.
Mr Adolf Ogi is in many ways a very special individual. He is a much respected and admired leader in politics, in sports, in the arts, in world affairs, and in humanitarian development.
As Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General on Sports for Development and Peace, Mr Ogi has a truly meaningful role to play in today′s world, a world that has seen far too much violence and far too little kindness.
If only more efforts and more resources and more attention are given to developing sports as a means of promoting peace and human development, the world will immediately become a better place, a safer place, a more peaceful place.
As we speak, an invasion of a depleted country is taking place. Bombs and missiles made so deadly so as to cause the most damage and destruction are raining down on a country of impoverished people.
In this war, as in all other wars, many people will be killed, many made homeless, and many will become refugees with little hope for a better life.
More than 130 million people were killed, directly or indirectly, in wars fought during the last century. This was 3 times more than in all the previous 500 years. And it is believed that wars will kill more people during this century than the last.
It is against this rather sad and gloomy backdrop that we have gathered to witness the opening of this exhibition.
It is now my pleasure to invite Mr Ogi to speak to us.
