Limkokwing University of Creative Technology made an impression at the 2010 WebAward Competition held recently, taking home three WebAwards in total and surpassing its showing at the same competition last year.

The University received the WebAward for Outstanding Achievement in Web Development for each of the following levels: Education Standard of Excellence, Portal Standard of Excellence and University Standard of Excellence.

The WebAward for Portal Standard of Excellence was handed out for the website’s integrated Student Portal that allows students access to information and course materials, as well as function as a medium of communication between students. The Student Portal is accessed on a daily basis by over 5,000 students comprising more than 150 nationalities. The website alone recorded 108 million hits from 190 countries last year. It is poised to exceed 150 million hits this year and has accumulated traffic of more than 230 million hits from 222 countries and territories since January 2009. One of the judges said: “I think this is a very engaging site for students. Hopefully not too overwhelming!”

The WebAwards is an annual website award competition that names the best websites in 96 industries while setting the standard of excellence for website development. It is organised by the Web Marketing Association that was founded in 1997 to help set a high standard for Internet marketing and web development.

The competition judges all websites based on the following seven criteria: Design, ease of use, copywriting, interactivity, use of technology, innovation and content. This year’s competition compiled over 300 judges from a variety of industries, representing established names that include Razorfish, DraftFCB, CNN.com, Microsoft, London Business School, Lenovo, IBM, Bell Canada and General Electric.

The Web Marketing Association is given credibility by its staff of volunteers, made up of marketing, advertising, public relations and web design professionals around the world who share a passion for improving the quality of advertising, marketing and web site development on the Internet.

Other tertiary institutions that made the winners list for the ‘Education’ category include University of Denver, University of Bedfordshire, University of Minnesota, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Murdoch University and Swinburne University. Limkokwing University emerged as the only winning entry to represent Malaysia in the ‘Education’ category.

This year’s WebAwards Competition also saw winning entries comprising several heavyweight industry players, including Cisco, Lexus, Nike, Nokia, eBay, LG, Gatorade, Colgate, IKEA, Businessweek, HSBC, Coca-Cola, Sony, Volvo and FIAT.

Limkokwing University’s participation in the 2009 WebAward Competition was rewarded with the WebAward for Outstanding Achievement in Web Development for Best Arts Website.
