About 30 members from the Federation of Lim Association Malaysia gathered this morning at the Limkokwing Presidential Library to honour one of their clansmen, Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing, who was bestowed with the Honorary Lifetime President title for his achievement as the founder of the “world’s first university founded by a Lim”.
A plaque with golden Chinese characters set against a black background that spelt the pride of the 900,000-strong Lim community in the country was handed over to Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing in recognition of his services as an educator, one who has taken the Limkokwing brand of creative education to “all the four continents of the world”.
Representing the Lim Association at the ceremony were its president Dr. Robert Lim and its Executive Permanent Advisor, Tan Sri Lim Gait Thong.
They were joined by the CEO of Gula Perak, Tan Sri Lim Cheng Pow, CEO of Pitijaya Group, Tan Sri Dato’ Lim Soon Peng and the CEO of Ann Joo Berhad, Datuk Lim Kien Nam among other committee members.
“This recognition would enable us to work together as there is still much to be done.”
Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing pointed out that the award will further strengthen the role of Limkokwing University as a centre of creative education attracting students from far and near to acquire 21st century education and industry skills to face today’s challenges.
Earlier Dr. Robert Lim paid tribute to Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing describing the professor as the “iconic man” and a “household name” well known for advocating creativity and innovation in education as the tools to redesign the future.
“He is not just a role model but an icon, for him the sky is the limit. Tan Sri Lim is a source of great pride to the Lim clan in Malaysia and indeed throughout the world.”
In tracing the history of the Lims, Dr. Lim also ascribed the Lim clan in Malaysia as a “force to be reckoned with in economy, education and politics”.
Tan Sri Lim announced that the Limkokwing Foundation has allocated RM10 million worth of scholarships for deserving Chinese students to acquire innovative skills at Limkokwing University.
“This fund will be to sponsor Chinese students in the acquisition of smart skills that will place them in high-tech and high income careers. I shall work with the Lim Foundation on its implementation.”
In summing up, Dr. Robert said the Lim Association is proud of Tan Sri Lim’s achievements, most notably, in turning Limkokwing University into a world-class institution, one founded by a member of the Lim clan. “The university carries the name of Lim. This is something great to us and that is why we are here today to recognize this feat.”
Limkokwing University is represented in three continents of Asia, Africa and Europe with 12 campuses hosting over 30,000 students from 150 countries - and within five years’ time, it hopes to set up 30 more campuses worldwide.
Today, there are some 75 million Lims dispersed around the world with an estimated 800,000 in Malaysia alone.
Only one Lim has established a university that also carries the surname Lim, an achievement that has received its due recognition as the “world’s first university founded by a Lim” – Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Lim Kok Wing.
