Lesotho may be a landlocked country but it is a land blessed with natural rare beauty and equally endowed with many resources such as diamonds, and water. It is also a country peopled by a gifted and talented race known for their courage and fortitude in facing the challenges of the day.

And for more than 320 young Basotho it was both a historic day and a personal triumph as they became the first batch of graduates to leave the hallowed grounds of the Limkokwing University since it was set up in Maseru, Lesotho in 2008.

Changing face of Lesotho

Lesotho Minister of Education and Training, the Hon Mamphono Khaketla, had a special message for the pioneering graduates, who are now creative professionals ready to engineer Lesotho’s nation-building aspirations in tandem with its Vision 2020.

“To our Basotho graduates, I know for certain that this day is a time of celebration when dreams are fulfilled and you return to your homes glowing with happiness, because of your elevated status as creative professionals. I have seen some of the work you have produced and I have also heard a lot about what you are capable of.”

Lesotho Prime Minister invited the new Basotho graduates to go beyond the ordinary and achieve the impossible through their newly-acquired mindsets, skills and knowledge. He challenged them to take Lesotho to great heights, far beyond Vision 2020.

She said that “Lesotho will not be the same again”, because this new generation of graduates have been embedded with an entrepreneurial spirit with which to drive Lesotho forward as a modern, progressive and prosperous nation in the African continent.

Going beyond

Prime Minister Dr. Pakalitha Mosisili told the “empowered future-ready graduates” to take their place in Lesotho’s march towards progress and development, calling on them to be inspired and “go beyond the ordinary and attempt to achieve something new, something creative and something innovative.”

“For the first time, we have university graduates with a different mindset who enter the job market prepared to be entrepreneurs and to create employment. I am amazed and, indeed, impressed by the creativity displayed by our students. This is what education should do.”

For the 326 new graduates, it was a turning point in their lives, a moment to witness their dreams becoming realities right before them, and an occasion to aspire beyond their chosen careers.

“We came here three years ago with the slight idea of what this place was going to offer. Now here we are three years later with a wealth of knowledge artistic qualities as well as independence. This is the beginning of the future. Now we are holding our future in our hands. To the government of Lesotho, words alone cannot describe our appreciation and gratitude as there are enough to express how grateful we are. We are indeed indebted to you and we promise to give back everything that was instilled in us.”

“Many of us entered the university as shy individuals who did not even know how to use a computer, let alone be part of the global social networks or create our own blogs. But today, we have been transformed into confident, skilled, techno-savvy graduates who will put Lesotho on the international map, and contribute in making decisions as how Lesotho can reach its objective by the year 2020. We are the next generation and we are ready to move and shake this world. We are truly empowered future-ready graduates.”

Modern Lesotho

Lesotho, a landlocked Kingdom within South Africa, is emphasizing greater importance on education to take it to beyond Vision 2020. A partner, Limkokwing University is working closely with the Government to produce industry-ready graduates needed to move Lesotho to the next level.

Tanki Makara and Selupe Seboka are two of the 326 Basotho graduates on the threshold of a new and exciting future as the movers and shakers of modern Lesotho. Earlier Prime Minister Pakalitha said they are Lesotho’s new batch of entrepreneurs that the country needs to empower itself forward.

Lesotho is well-endowed with rich deposits of diamonds and other resources such as water, textiles, wool and mohair. To put these to good use for the benefit of the people and nation, skilled professionals are the solution, which the University is addressing through its focus on innovation in education.

In his message to the graduating Class of 2011, the President of Limkokwing University Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Lim Kok Wing, said “From you, I expect nothing less. In a way, you will make your mark in this country. The footprints may not be as large but making big footprints is what I expect that you will do.”
