Addressed by Tan Sri Lim at Limkokwing University College of Creative Technology, Kuala Lumpur
22 January 2000
First of all, I would like to extend my heartiest congratulations to all who are graduating today.
And to all your parents who are the real heroes of today′s celebrations.
In keeping with tradition, this is when I bid farewell to all graduating and departing students.
To all of you who are graduating today, this is what I would like to say.
It has always been people who have the passion to exceed expectations, and the drive to push faster and further, in whatever they do, who make a difference in our lives.
Technology may bring about and quicken the pace of change, but it is always people who set the pace, and shape the change.
The past, the present, and the future are and will always be, about people.
People who make things happen.
I hope you will remember this well as you begin the next phase of your life′s journey.
And as you take your place among the young leaders of this country, you will bear in mind that this is now your time. This, the 21st Century, belongs to you.
You will make the best use of the knowledge and the skills you have acquired, and will continue to acquire, to help build this young nation.
You are among the most promising young citizens of this nation. You will contribute as best you can to the well-being of all - to those you know, and those you don′t.
You will be generous in giving help to all who are in need, and to all who ask for it, irrespective of race, colour or creed.
As you move forward in life, you will look back and remember the people who have shown you kindness, the people who have given you encouragement to achieve greatness.
You will not forget those who have given you help so you may be where you are today. Your instructors, your mentors, your peers, your closest friends. It might not even have crossed your mind that others could have wanted success for you as much as you have wanted it yourself.
Most importantly, you will always remember - the selflessness, the unconditional love and never-ending patience of your parents. (Sure they sometimes scream when you come home very late.)
But you know what enormous sacrifices they have made just so you may have a place in the sun, just so you may have the secured opportunity to create your own dreams, and to build your own castles.
They care for you more than you will ever know. To them, you must show gratitude and appreciation. Upon them, you will shower love and affection.
As you stand ready to go, you will not forget that it is determination and not luck, that gives you the momentum to take flight.
That it is the power of courage and imagination that gives you the wings to fly.
And fly you will.
And soar you must.
You may not see me, but I will be watching from wherever I am. With these thoughts in my mind, I now bid you farewell.
And wish you all the very best of luck.
